Playing in the big league….

I am extremely honoured and pleased that I was invited to join the ZS9X contest team for the upcoming CQ-WPX SSB and CW contests for 2012. Most likely, to take part as a Multi Two station.

The ZS9X contest station is by far the most prestigious and capable station in Southern Africa. The station is well situated a few kilometers outside of Bloemfontein and has a number of very tall towers and large antennas.

Heck, I am very pleased with this development. This is a great opportunity for me to learn from our top contest operators.

I guess I'll  have to spend a lot of time with “Morse Runner” in the next few months. I would hate to blow this opportunity due to poor performance from my side.

Not sure who are on the team yet, but some of the regular operators are: Bernie ZS4TX, Chris ZS6RI, Chris ZS6EZ and John ZS4S and they are all very experienced in contesting.

It will be a big challenge for me changing from contesting in the slow lane to being a team member of a “Big Gun” contest station.

  1. What a great opportunity - the time will surely fly by for you. For non-stop activity, WPX even beats CQWW.

  2. Hi John,

I was looking at the web sites of the 2 contests to determine how they differ and why they have a different appeal. I find it rather strange they are both sponsored by CQ magazine, yet they look and feel quite different.

The opportunity to be on the ZS9X team is certainly a great opportunity and I am looking forward to it. Looking at the way the sun is behaving I suspect we are going to have a great HF conditions in the next 2 or 3 years.

This is a far cry from my normal QRP and wet string approach to Radio Sport.

  4. Nice station you have down there in ZS land. ZS4TX told me a bit about it when I met him at the Azores Island Hunt. http://www.lb3hc.net/archives/1732
